I know Road King offers two variants of Weta Trailers for skinny and fat tires. Is there another manufacturer available for this style of trailer?
And, is anyone using a modified flatbed-type trailer? I remember seeing someone out west building a small flat bed trailer.
I currently have a RK with the skinny tire setup and looking to upgrade to fat wheels because of soft sand in Florida. Please post pics if you have them!
Thanks! Bob
I generally launch my boat at a spot about 700m or so from my home and have found it convenient just to tow the boat there on its dolly behind my old mountain bike. I “upgraded” the dolly wheels to some 4.80 x 8 trailer tires with ‘sealed’ ball bearings on 20mm stainless axles. That seems to work OK, at least once I packed the wheel bores full of grease. Those tires roll decently over the short stretch of soft sand at the launch, though they bog pretty badly in the muck in the first 20-30m of shallows.
For offsite winter storage, I use a crappy 6x8 flatbed trailer that came with the boat when I bought it used. The PO had mounted a wood ‘guide’ to the trailer tongue that locates the front of the dolly. He had a complicated way of tying the boat down, but I just use a couple of ratchet straps these days. He also included a couple of 2x8 ramps, of the sort used to load a lawn tractor or ATV, and a jack stand to steady the trailer when it’s not hooked to a vehicle. Unfortunately I don’t have any pics that show the guide on the trailer tongue.
