On August 23, three Weta sailors made the trek to Farnham, Va for the 19th annual Rappahannock Rivah Regatta (AKA: RRR).
Held on the adjoining waterfront properties of Scott & David, this is a weekend party, complete with nighttime Pickleball, cornhole, and a great barbecue feast. There’s lots of space for camping and hotels are not too far away. And by the way, there was some sailboat racing. Chuck and Bill arrived mid-day on Friday and were able to get out for some practice sailing. Alan showed up in time to rig his boat before dark.
After a postpone on shore Saturday morning the wind started to fill in. There were a dozen Hobie 16s, three Wetas and an open fleet consisting of a Hobie 14 turbo, various Nacras and two classic 20’ Shark Cats. The Wetas started with the 16’s. The wind was patchy. The current was 2-3 knots in the same direction as the wind. It made for some interesting tactics Weta sailors not used to current!
The first race found all 3 Wetas overlapped at the weather mark. Chuck found the puffs and avoided the holes to finish first. Chuck and Alan alternated first and second place over the following 3 races with an very close finish in race 4. At the end of the day Alan & Chuck were tied with 6 points, Alan ahead on the tiebreak having won the last race. Interesting that the Weta sailors beat the H16s boat for boat every race. Sunday racing was canceled due to lack of wind.
This was a great event. Nearly everyone came by to look at the Weta.
Definitely plan to attend the 20th RRR next year. It will be an event not to be missed.
